This is a must-win for Denver. The Nuggets were supposed to cruise past the sixth-seeded Timberwolves but Minnesota has fought back from 3-1 down to force a Game 6 — and if Denver lose tonight, a winner-takes-all Game 7 awaits on Saturday.

Series summary — how did we get here?
This series has been one of the most dramatic of the first round. Denver won Game 1 convincingly as Nikola Jokic posted a triple-double. Minnesota won the next three games to take a 3-1 series lead, with Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu outstanding.
Then Denver showed the heart of champions. Jokic had 27 points and 15 rebounds in a dominant Game 5 win, sending the series back to Minnesota tied 3-2. Now Game 6 is at Target Center — and the crowd will be electric.
- Game 1: Denver 116 – Minnesota 105
- Game 2: Minnesota 119 – Denver 114
- Game 3: Minnesota 113 – Denver 96
- Game 4: Minnesota 112 – Denver 96
- Game 5: Denver 125 – Minnesota 113
- Game 6: Thursday 30 April, 12:30pm AEST — ESPN/Kayo
What’s at stake
For Minnesota — a win tonight ends the series and sends the Timberwolves to the second round for the second time in three seasons. Anthony Edwards has been the best player in this series and closing it out at home would cement his status as one of the top five players in the league.
For Denver — a loss ends their season. Nikola Jokic has won three MVP awards and led the Nuggets to a championship in 2023, but this roster is ageing. A first-round exit to the sixth seed would raise serious questions about the team’s future direction. Aaron Gordon is playing hurt with a calf injury and Peyton Watson remains out with a hamstring issue.
The Jokic factor
Nikola Jokic is the greatest big man in NBA history by many measures. In Game 5 he was unstoppable — 27 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists. If he plays at that level again tonight Denver can win anywhere. But in Minnesota, with the crowd behind the Wolves and Edwards hitting shots, stopping Jokic alone won’t be enough.
