Published Wed 6 May 2026, 8:35am AEST · Two NBA Round 2 Game 1s today. Pistons vs Cavaliers tips at 9:00am AEST on ESPN / Kayo / Disney+. Thunder vs Lakers tips at 10:30am AEST on NBA League Pass only. Here’s the full Australian preview.

The 2026 Conference Semifinals are filling out fast. The Knicks crushed the 76ers and the Wolves stole Game 1 in San Antonio yesterday. Today the other two Round 2 series begin — and the second tip is the biggest matchup of the entire 2026 NBA Playoffs.

Pistons vs Cavaliers — Game 1 today, 9:00am AEST

The 1-seed Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the East Semifinals at 9:00am AEST today. Detroit advanced after a tough seven-game series with the Magic. Cleveland survived their own seven-game grinder against the Raptors, finally putting Toronto away on Monday morning AEST.

Detroit are the No. 1 seed in the East but Cleveland walks in with two specific advantages: rest is now equal (both teams played a Game 7 on Monday morning AEST), and the Cavaliers are the more battle-hardened roster. Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Evan Mobley have been the trio that has carried Cleveland through both Round 1 and into this matchup.

What to watch for: Cade Cunningham’s matchup with Mitchell will define this series. Detroit’s frontcourt depth needs to test Mobley early. The home crowd at Little Caesars Arena will be loud — Detroit have not been past Round 1 since 2008, and this is the first home Round 2 game for the franchise in 18 years.

Where to watch in Australia: ESPN broadcast in the US, which means Kayo Sports, ESPN Australia, Disney+ and NBA League Pass all carry the game live. Tip is at 9:00am AEST.

Thunder vs Lakers — Game 1 today, 10:30am AEST

This is the matchup the entire NBA world has been waiting for. The defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder host the Los Angeles Lakers at 10:30am AEST today in Game 1 of the West Semifinals — and the betting markets have it as the lopsided heavyweight bout of the 2026 Playoffs.

OKC are at home, are the top seed in the West, swept the Suns in Round 1 and have now won 11 consecutive first-round playoff games over the last two seasons. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning MVP and has looked even better this April than he did winning the title last June. Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams round out a starting five that has been the most efficient in basketball.

The Lakers come in with the LeBron James / Bronny James / Luka Dončić storyline that has defined their 2025-26 season. Luka is the offensive engine. LeBron, in his 23rd season, gives them another wing creator. Bronny is on the roster. They beat the Rockets in six in Round 1 and the team has been better than Vegas expected — but this is a different test entirely.

What to watch for: The Luka vs SGA backcourt matchup. OKC’s swarming defence against Luka is the central question of the series. Whether LeBron can be more than a complementary piece against a team this good. And whether Lakers head coach JJ Redick has a lineup combination that survives OKC’s bench unit.

Where to watch in Australia: NBC broadcast in the US — which means in Australia this game is on NBA League Pass only. Kayo, ESPN Australia and Disney+ do not carry NBC games. Tip is at 10:30am AEST.
