The story of the NBA off-season had a headline nobody quite believed until it happened. Sunday 26 July: LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. A two-year, $8 million deal — a fraction of what he could have commanded — pairing him with Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey. James called it “my last decision” on social media. At age 42 and entering his 24th NBA season, the all-time leading scorer has chosen a Philadelphia roster stacked to chase the championship that would put him on top of the sport’s ledger in a way no player before him has managed. Here’s the news, plus everything else that’s reshaped the league since the Knicks lifted the Larry O’Brien trophy in mid-June.
LeBron James signs with the Philadelphia 76ers
The biggest single move of any NBA off-season in years. After more than three weeks of speculation involving the Knicks, Warriors, Heat, Timberwolves and other suitors, LeBron announced on X on Friday 24 July that he would sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal became official on Sunday 26 July: two years, $8 million with a player option after year one.
James’s own words carried the weight: “This is my last decision.” He also revealed that he strongly considered retirement at the end of the 2025-26 season. “I thought I was done when the season ended… I was pretty sure I played my last game,” James wrote. “I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.”
The financial numbers signal the intent. Eight million dollars over two years is well below LeBron’s market rate — he took the discount to give Philadelphia the flexibility to build a title-caliber roster around him. It’s the exact move a superstar makes when the goal is to win, not to earn.
James joins a Philadelphia frontcourt that includes former MVP Joel Embiid, giving the 76ers two former league MVPs sharing the same paint. Add newly-acquired Jaylen Brown (traded from the Celtics earlier in the offseason) and rising superstar guard Tyrese Maxey, and Philadelphia’s roster on paper is one of the strongest four-star cores in the league. Fanatics sold out of LeBron 76ers jerseys within hours of the announcement.
What this means for the East and for LeBron’s legacy
Two immediate implications. First, the Eastern Conference just became far more competitive. The reigning champion Knicks now face a 76ers team with two MVPs, an All-NBA guard and an All-Star wing — a genuine threat to their title defence. The Cavaliers, Heat (who added Giannis, see below), and Pistons all remain in the mix. The East, previously projected as the Knicks’ to lose, is suddenly a full-blown five-team race.
Second, the legacy stakes are personal. LeBron has won championships with three franchises (Miami, Cleveland, LA Lakers). If he wins one in Philadelphia, he becomes the first player in NBA history to win championships with four different franchises. He’s currently tied at three with several other all-time greats. A fifth title, of any kind, would break that tie forever.
Giannis Antetokounmpo traded to the Miami Heat
The other blockbuster of the summer. Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis were traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat. Milwaukee received a genuinely massive package in return: Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, a 2031 first-rounder, a 2033 first-rounder, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
For Miami, this is the star acquisition the franchise has been chasing since Jimmy Butler’s departure. Erik Spoelstra now pairs Giannis with Bam Adebayo up front — one of the most physically dominant frontcourts in the league. The Heat immediately vault into the East contender conversation, joining the Knicks, the newly LeBron-led 76ers and the Cavaliers.
For Milwaukee, this is the end of an era. The Bucks won a title with Giannis in 2021. They now begin a rebuild with Tyler Herro as the offensive centrepiece.
Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia — before LeBron
Weeks before LeBron’s decision, the 76ers had already traded for 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. That trade — separate from and prior to the LeBron announcement — laid the groundwork for Philadelphia becoming a legitimate suitor for James. When LeBron picked Philly, Brown was already in the fold, alongside Maxey and Embiid.
The Celtics, having been eliminated by the 76ers in Round 1 of the 2026 playoffs, now find themselves in a reset. Brown moves at age 29. Boston’s championship window, so recently open with the 2024 title, has closed for now.
Wembanyama signs the second-biggest extension in NBA history
While the free agents were in flux, the Spurs locked down their franchise. Victor Wembanyama signed a reported five-year, $252 million rookie maximum extension — the second-largest extension in NBA history, trailing only Donovan Mitchell’s $273 million deal signed with Cleveland earlier this offseason.
After the Spurs’ surprise Finals run — beating the defending-champion Thunder in seven games in the Conference Finals before losing to the Knicks in five — this was the offseason’s most important non-move for San Antonio. Wembanyama’s message: “I’m here to stay.” The Spurs also retained sharpshooting wing Julian Champagnie, brought back Harrison Barnes on a one-year deal, and re-signed backup guard Jordan McLaughlin. The core that reached the Finals returns intact.
Ja Morant to Portland, Randle to Brooklyn, Porziņģis to Golden State
The mid-tier star moves that shaped the West:
Ja Morant was traded from Memphis to the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland gets a young star to pair with Deni Avdija and Scoot Henderson. Memphis begins its rebuild.
Julius Randle was traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
Kristaps Porziņģis signed with the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors add a floor-spacing seven-footer to Steph Curry’s aging supporting cast — a move that had looked more significant before LeBron chose Philadelphia over Golden State.
The Knicks quietly retool
The reigning champions kept things low-key. After losing Mitchell Robinson in free agency, they signed Andre Drummond to a one-year deal reported at $3.8-3.9 million — a classic defending-champion move: cheap, functional, targeted at exactly the roster gap. They also added veteran shooter Landry Shamet on a four-year deal.
Head coach Mike Brown returns for his second season having just won a championship. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges — all under contract. The Knicks aren’t chasing headlines. They’re set up to defend.

2026-27 title contenders — reshaped
The 2026-27 NBA regular season tips off in late October. Based on the offseason’s activity, the provisional title contenders sit like this:
- New York Knicks — defending champions, largely intact, quiet retool
- Philadelphia 76ers — LeBron + Embiid + Brown + Maxey
- Miami Heat — Giannis + Bam Adebayo up front
- Oklahoma City Thunder — deepest, most well-coached roster in the West
- San Antonio Spurs — Wembanyama year four, Finals core returns
- Cleveland Cavaliers — Mitchell’s max extension anchors the East frontcourt fight
Notably absent from the contender list this year: the Golden State Warriors. Without landing LeBron they now face an uphill road even to the play-in tournament. The Lakers, without LeBron and now completely focused around Luka Dončić, become a proper Luka team but without the safety net.
