The NHL off-season enters its final phase before training camps open in September. Most of the significant free-agency deals are done. The trade market has slowed. The 2026-27 NHL regular season is just over two months away. Here’s the week in NHL news for Australian fans.

Ripple effects of Mitch Marner to Vegas

Two weeks after Vegas signed Mitch Marner to an eight-year, $12 million AAV deal from Toronto, the ripple effects continue. Various West-Division analysts have adjusted their preseason projections. Vegas now sits alongside Colorado and Edmonton as the top three Western Conference contenders. The Marner-Eichel top line pairing has been discussed as one of the most exciting on-paper duos in the league.

Toronto continues its rebuild-through-youth approach. Gavin McKenna, the #1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, has been in preseason media availability throughout the week. Reports suggest McKenna will start the 2026-27 season on the Maple Leafs’ NHL roster rather than being sent to development.

Carolina champions continue celebrations

Six weeks after winning the Stanley Cup, the Hurricanes’ celebration cycle continues. Championship rings will be presented at the season opener. Rod Brind’Amour continues to be available in Carolina media covering the offseason.

Carolina’s off-season moves have been steady: acquiring John Carlson from the Ducks strengthens an already-elite defensive corps. The core that went 16-3 in the playoffs — captain Jordan Staal (Conn Smythe winner), Brandon Bussi in goal, Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake, Logan Stankoven, Frederik Andersen — all under contract for 2026-27.

Other notable NHL off-season news:

Brady Tkachuk in Florida. The Panthers have introduced Brady in his new jersey. He’ll play alongside his younger brother Matthew — a rare NHL sibling pairing. Florida returns as a top Eastern Conference contender.

Nikolaj Ehlers’s decision. Ehlers — one of the top free agents on the market — reportedly continues to weigh offers. His decision may be one of the last major moves of the offseason.

Vladislav Gavrikov continues to settle into his new team on a 7-year, $7M AAV deal. He’ll be a top-4 defenceman on his new roster.
