National League: Brewers hit 80 first, Dodgers close
NL Central — Milwaukee holds, Cubs push
The Brewers at 81-50 became the first MLB team to reach 80 wins in 2026 this week. Their lead over the Cubs (75-56) held at six games. Chicago continues to press but hasn’t been able to close the gap decisively. This has become one of the most compelling division races in baseball — Milwaukee is dominant, but not so dominant that the Cubs can be counted out with five weeks to play.
NL West — Dodgers matching pace
The Dodgers at 80-51 have moved into second-best status in the National League, matching the Braves on wins and just one game behind the Brewers overall. Their gap over the Padres (71-60) is now nine games — the NL West is Los Angeles’s to lose. San Diego at 71-60 has slipped slightly, though they remain firmly in the wild-card conversation. The Diamondbacks at 69-62 also stay competitive for a wild-card slot.
NL East — Braves still class
The Braves at 76-55 have maintained their lead over the Phillies (73-58) at three games. Atlanta remains the class of the East. Philadelphia has closed slightly but the Braves’ regular-season consistency has been remarkable.
American League: Rays hold, Yankees push
AL East — Yankees close to within 3
The Rays at 77-53 held onto the AL East lead but the Yankees at 74-56 have closed the gap to three games. New York’s push has been the story of August in the East. The Red Sox at 71-59 remain the third team in a genuine three-way race. All three teams are firmly playoff-bound; the division and seeding is what’s at stake.
AL West — genuinely tied
The Astros and Rangers are dead level at 65-66 apiece for the AL West lead. This is now the closest division race in baseball. The Mariners at 62-69 have slipped further out of contention. Whichever of Houston or Texas gets hot in the final month wins the division.
AL Central — White Sox holding
The White Sox at 68-62 have maintained a three-game lead over the Guardians (65-66). Chicago’s remarkable turnaround from AL laughing stock to genuine division leader continues. Cleveland has closed slightly but not enough to change the balance yet.
