A quieter week in MLS as the schedule slowed for the FIFA international break — but the storylines heading into the resumption remain compelling. Nashville SC still lead MLS at 40 points. Inter Miami with Lionel Messi sit second at 38 points. Vancouver Whitecaps top the West on tiebreaker over LAFC. And Atlanta United’s historic collapse continues at the bottom of the table. Here’s the picture as the league gets back to competitive action.
Overall standings — the top three
Nashville SC at 40 points (12-2-4) remain the top team in MLS. Their pause across the international window gives the field a chance to close, but with only two losses across the entire season, this is a Nashville team playing with genuine tactical discipline and resolute defence. Head coach BJ Callaghan continues to build one of the most quietly effective squads in the league.
Inter Miami CF at 38 points (11-2-5) hold second place and remain the marquee attraction. Lionel Messi’s minutes management remains the key operational question for the Miami staff — how much is he playing every match, and how much rest is he getting? Suárez continues to produce alongside him. Two points behind Nashville with games in hand, Miami are the favourites to lift the Supporters’ Shield if they can close the small gap.
Vancouver Whitecaps at 34 points (10-3-4) and LAFC at 34 points (10-5-4) sit tied at the top of the Western Conference. Vancouver hold the tiebreaker on wins. This has become the surprise of the 2026 season — Vancouver were not on anyone’s preseason top-three list and are now genuine playoff title contenders.
Western Conference — tight top four
Behind Vancouver and LAFC, the San Jose Earthquakes at 33 points and Houston Dynamo at 32 points sit within striking distance. Both are having strong seasons that few predicted. The West’s top four are separated by just two points — the coming weeks will define seeding.
Behind them, Real Salt Lake at 27, FC Dallas at 27, and Saint Louis City at 26 sit in a genuine wild-card race. The bottom of the West features the LA Galaxy at 22 points — one of the worst LA Galaxy seasons in franchise history — and the Colorado Rapids at 22 points.
Eastern Conference — Nashville and Miami, then a gap
After Nashville (40) and Miami (38), the East drops off sharply. New England Revolution at 30 points and Chicago Fire at 29 sit in the second tier. Both are decent playoff sides. Behind them, NYCFC and FC Cincinnati are tied at 26, with Charlotte and NY Red Bulls at 25 rounding out the top eight.
Atlanta United’s collapse continues
The story keeps getting worse for the 2018 MLS Cup winners. Atlanta United sit dead last in MLS at 12 points (3-12-3). Three wins in the entire season. Twelve losses. It’s now looking increasingly likely to be the worst season in franchise history, and the coming weeks will be about damage control rather than results. Sporting Kansas City at 14 points aren’t much better. Both franchises face significant offseason overhauls.
