A week that shifted from routine transactions to genuine legacy moments. Russell Westbrook — 2017 NBA MVP, nine-time All-Star, all-time triple-double king — retired from professional basketball on Wednesday 12 August. Bradley Beal signed with the LA Clippers on a two-year deal. Dillon Brooks signed a three-year, $73 million extension with Phoenix. And the Clippers continued their post-Kawhi retool by also adding Rui Hachimura. Here’s the week in NBA off-season news for the week ending 16 August 2026.
Russell Westbrook retires — an era ends
The biggest personal story of the NBA off-season. Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from professional basketball on Wednesday 12 August 2026, ending an 18-year career that included:
- 2017 NBA MVP
- Nine All-Star selections
- The all-time NBA leader in triple-doubles (198 career, breaking Oscar Robertson’s record)
- 2016-17 season with 42 triple-doubles — most in a single season in NBA history
- Two Olympic gold medals with Team USA
Westbrook spent the bulk of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder before stints with Houston, Washington, the LA Lakers, the LA Clippers, Denver and Sacramento. His high-motor, high-usage style redefined what an NBA point guard could look like at his physical peak. He was one of the defining players of the modern NBA era. A future Hall of Famer.
The Clippers’ big week
LA’s off-season has been the busiest in the league. Two significant moves this week alone:
Bradley Beal signed a two-year, $13.17 million contract with the Clippers on 13 August, including a 2027-28 club option. Beal — one of the NBA’s most efficient scorers over the past decade — joins LA to help fill the offensive void created by the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto. It’s a genuine bargain contract by his historical standards.
Rui Hachimura also agreed to a two-year, $28 million deal with the Clippers this week. The Japanese-born forward brings genuine wing scoring and floor spacing to a Clippers rotation that needed both after the Leonard trade. Between Beal, Hachimura and Brandon Ingram (acquired in the Kawhi trade), the Clippers have completely rebuilt their supporting cast around James Harden and John Collins.
Phoenix Suns lock in Dillon Brooks
Dillon Brooks signed a three-year, $73 million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns on 8 August 2026, running through 2029-30. Brooks is coming off the best season of his nine-year career — a career-high 20.2 points per game as part of a 45-win Suns team that reached the playoffs. Phoenix’s continuity move: the Suns had already re-signed Collin Gillespie, Mark Williams and Jordan Goodwin, and acquired Miles Bridges earlier in the offseason.
Other notable moves this week
- Cleveland-Charlotte trade — Tre Mann to Cleveland from Charlotte for Dennis Schröder and cash. A quiet swap that gives Cleveland veteran depth at guard.
- Neemias Queta extension — Boston Celtics locked up their young centre on a 4-year, $56 million deal.
- Draymond Green re-signed with Warriors — 1-year, $27.7 million.
- Fred VanVleet opted into player option — the Rockets guard will return on his $25 million player option for 2026-27 after missing all of 2025-26 with a torn ACL.
Storylines to watch
The Clippers’ full retool. With Kawhi gone but Beal, Hachimura, Ingram and John Collins all now in place, this is a different Clippers team than we’ve seen in years. Whether it works is a separate question.
Extension season winding down. With training camps opening in early October, expect the remaining extension candidates — including Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokić, Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and Tyrese Haliburton — to make decisions in the coming weeks.
LeBron-in-Philly excitement building. With just 10 weeks until the season tips, the Sixers’ expectations continue to rise. LeBron + Embiid + Brown + Maxey is one of the most anticipated on-paper combinations in years.
