A quieter week in NBA news as the offseason winds toward its conclusion. The Minnesota Timberwolves executed a three-player trade with Utah on 29 August as part of stretch-deadline planning. Cleveland waived Cam Whitmore via the stretch provision. Denver waived two-way player Julian Reese. And the roster deadline effects rippled across the league as teams positioned their books for 2026-27. Training camps open in early October — approximately eight weeks away. Here’s the week in NBA offseason news.
Timberwolves three-player Utah trade
Minnesota sent John Konchar, Cody Williams and Josh Green to the Utah Jazz on 29 August as part of a strategic salary manoeuvre timed to the stretch-provision deadline. The Timberwolves had reportedly been planning to stretch Konchar’s $6.2 million salary at a hit of just over $2 million per season for the next three seasons — the trade to Utah was structured to open cap flexibility for Minnesota. For Utah, the deal continues their asset-accumulation offseason approach as they build around younger talent.
Cam Whitmore waived by Cleveland via stretch provision
Cam Whitmore was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers on 28 August via the stretch provision. The 21-year-old forward was acquired from Houston in an earlier offseason trade and never found his footing on Cleveland’s roster. The Cavaliers now need to sign a rookie minimum player to meet the mandatory roster minimum — options include Khalifa Diop, Ismael Kamagate or Saliou Niang, with Diop reportedly the frontrunner.
The stretch provision allows teams to spread a waived player’s remaining salary across multiple years of cap hit rather than a single year — an important cap-management tool that has to be executed by 29 August each summer.
Julian Reese waived by Denver
The Denver Nuggets waived two-way player Julian Reese from his two-way contract on 28 August. Reese had been acquired from the Washington Wizards as part of the deal that sent Peyton Watson to Cleveland earlier in August. He’s expected to draw interest from other teams for another two-way deal — young talents with NBA reps are typically claimed quickly.
