The biggest pending question of the NHL off-season has been answered. Nikolaj Ehlers has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes — the reigning Stanley Cup champions add one of the summer’s most sought-after free agents. Free agency is now effectively wrapped up. Training camps open in early September. Here’s the state of the NHL as August rolls into its second half.
The signing: Ehlers to Carolina
Nikolaj Ehlers — one of the top free agents on the market throughout the summer — has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. The winger, who scored a goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against Vegas, joins the team that just won the Cup. The details are still being finalised in reporting but the deal appears to be in the six-to-seven-year range with an AAV in the $8-8.5 million range.
For Carolina, this is the strongest possible statement of intent. The Hurricanes have not simply held their championship roster together — they’ve added to it. First, veteran defenceman John Carlson acquired from Anaheim. Now Ehlers, a proven top-line scoring wing, joining Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake and the rest of a core that went 16-3 in the 2026 playoffs. This is a franchise clearly built to contend for back-to-back Cups.
The Vegas Golden Knights — 2026 Cup Final runners-up — will be watching this signing closely. Marner joining Vegas earlier this offseason was answered a fortnight later by Carolina adding Ehlers. The 2026-27 season promises to open with the same two teams as the natural title favourites.

Other notable NHL activity from the past week:
Akira Schmid extended by Florida Panthers. The goaltender signed a two-year, $2 million AAV extension, securing the Panthers’ 1B behind Sergei Bobrovsky. Bill Zito continues his masterful cap management.
Restricted free-agency situations resolving. Multiple RFA situations that had been dragging on are now moving: the Ducks matched a five-year, $18 million AAV offer sheet from the Flyers to retain Leo Carlsson. The Utah Mammoth matched an offer sheet on Barrett Hayton. Both teams retained key young pieces.
Claude Giroux returns to Ottawa Senators on a one-year, $5 million deal. The veteran forward comes back to Ottawa in his 40s to continue what has been a remarkable Hall of Fame-worthy career.
Simon Nemec re-signs with Calgary. The Flames locked up the young defenceman on a 5-year, $7.25 million AAV extension after acquiring him from the New Jersey Devils earlier in the offseason.
Training camp countdown
NHL training camps open in early-to-mid September — approximately six weeks away. Preseason games run through late September. The 2026-27 NHL regular season begins in early October.
