Detroit’s efforts to move Dylan Larkin remain stuck. And Quinn Hughes’s next contract could reset the market for elite defencemen. Brad Marchand undergoes surgery — Panthers face uncertainty
Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand has confirmed he underwent surgery this off-season to address a lingering injury after non-surgical treatments failed. The specifics of the procedure haven’t been disclosed but his availability for the start of the 2026-27 season is now genuinely uncertain.
For the Panthers, this creates real questions. Marchand — signed by Bill Zito during Florida’s Cup-winning offseason a year ago — was one of the veteran presences central to their identity. He produced 27 goals and 27 assists in 52 games last season while playing through pain. Head coach Paul Maurice will need contingency plans, and it’s a reminder that Florida’s older veteran core (Ekblad, Marchand, Barkov) is starting to face the injury realities that come with age.
Dylan Larkin trade situation drags on
Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin continues to sit at the centre of trade speculation, but talks remain stalled. Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit and Detroit has been unable to find a trade partner willing to meet their asking price. The story has been simmering all summer without resolution.
For Detroit, moving Larkin represents a genuine franchise pivot — trading their captain and best player would signal a full rebuild. For potential acquiring teams, Larkin brings top-line offensive talent but at a price that requires cap flexibility few contenders have this late in the summer.
Quinn Hughes contract talks intensify
Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes continues to work through contract negotiations with reports now suggesting his next deal could carry an AAV around $19 million — more than double his current $7.85 million cap hit. If true, that would place Hughes among the highest-paid defencemen in NHL history and reset the market for elite blueliners.
Hughes has established himself as one of the game’s premier offensive defencemen and remains the anchor of Vancouver’s defence. For the Canucks, the contract will define a significant chunk of the roster construction budget for years to come. Ownership has reportedly been signalling they want to reduce payroll — which raises the question of whether Hughes will actually receive such a lucrative extension in Vancouver, or whether trade talks might yet emerge.

- Jeff Skinner signs with Swiss team. The 34-year-old veteran forward — who terminated his Sharks deal last season and didn’t find an NHL landing spot — signed a one-year deal with ECH Biel-Bienne in Switzerland. He’ll still collect an NHL paycheque from Buffalo’s buyout ($2.44M/year through the next four seasons).
- Panthers’ Akira Schmid extended. Florida locked up their 1B goalie on a two-year, $2 million AAV deal.
