MLS action resumed after the FIFA international break and there was genuine movement across the table this week. Nashville SC extended their MLS lead to 43 points — five clear of Miami. Vancouver took outright leadership of the Western Conference. Houston Dynamo surged past LAFC into second place West. And the bottom of the table sees Sporting Kansas City now the worst team in MLS. Playoff seedings are starting to firm up.
Overall standings — Nashville pulling away
Nashville SC at 43 points (13-2-4) extend their MLS lead. Since our last wrap they’ve added three points and now sit five clear of Miami. This is genuinely one of the most impressive MLS regular seasons in recent memory. Nashville have won 13 of their 19 games with only two losses. Head coach BJ Callaghan’s tactical setup is the story of 2026.
Inter Miami CF at 38 points (11-3-5) sit second — their gap to Nashville has grown from two points to five in a fortnight. Messi and Suárez continue to be the marquee attraction but the Miami squad hasn’t managed to keep pace with Nashville’s consistency.
Western Conference — Vancouver take control
Vancouver Whitecaps at 37 points (11-3-4) have taken outright leadership of the Western Conference this week. Their 3-point week saw them break the tie with LAFC. Vancouver’s remarkable 2026 season continues — they weren’t in anyone’s preseason top three for the West and are now conference leaders with a real chance to lift the Supporters’ Shield.
Houston Dynamo at 35 points (11-6-2) have surged into second place in the West this week. Houston have quietly built one of the most consistent MLS rosters and are now firmly in the playoff conversation. LAFC at 34 points slipped to third in the West — still a genuine contender but no longer at the top of the conference.
Behind them, the San Jose Earthquakes at 33 remain in the mix. The West’s top four are separated by just four points. All four look playoff-bound.
Eastern Conference — Nashville and Miami still dominate
After Nashville (43) and Miami (38), the East drops sharply. Chicago Fire at 32 points and New England Revolution at 30 are the second tier. Neither has been able to challenge the top two but both are firmly playoff-bound.
Bottom of the table — Sporting KC now dead last
The wooden spoon race has shifted. Sporting Kansas City at 14 points (4-13-2) are now dead last in MLS, having dropped below Atlanta United (15 points, 4-12-3). Both franchises are having disastrous seasons. Sporting KC have lost 13 of 19. Neither team has any realistic playoff hope and both face significant offseason overhauls.

Storylines to follow into late August
Can anyone catch Nashville? The five-point gap they’ve opened over Miami is becoming meaningful. With around three months of regular season left, Nashville’s Supporters’ Shield candidacy is real.
Who wins the West? Vancouver’s outright lead is thin but real. The next month of head-to-head matchups against Houston, LAFC and San Jose defines this.
How much worse can Atlanta and Sporting KC get? Both franchises now project to finish with among the worst records in MLS history for established clubs. Offseason overhauls are inevitable.
